With so many low carb diets going around these days it is sometimes a little difficult to know which low carb foods are good for you. Now even though each of these low carb diets advocate certain foods being used in their low carb recipes you may feel that you aren’t getting the full range of health benefits from these.
Therefore while you are on one of these diets you should decide early on if you can stand to eat these foods your whole life and if they are in fact good for you. As all of the low carb diets state that meats, poultry, fish and eggs are good for you the amounts of these and the types should be regulated by finding out if these specific low carb foods are good.
You will sometimes find other products that will give the same nutrional value as the normal food type. For instance on low carb diets it is considered good to eat various cheeses like Cheddar cheese, goat cheese, cream cheese, Gouda, Swiss, Mozzarella, Roquefort and other Blue cheeses.
In addition there is a low carb product that allows you to have a baked cheese snack that has no added preservatives or flavorings. You can use these cheese snacks as soup toppings, salad dressings, and many interesting snacks.
We have all seen the Got Milk? campaign print ads. In fact, this has to be one of the most successful campaigns of all time.
This campaign has been around for twelve years, when they began placing the now infamous milk mustache on Billy Ray Cyrus, Christie Brinkley, Michael Jordan and Larry King.
And with a 90% consumer recall rate, why not keep going with it?

And of course the newest ad, with Sara Ramirez of Grey's Anatomy .
But have you seen what else Got Milk?and other promoters of our calcium intake are capable of, on top of our favorite milk mustache?
1) United States
How about this bus shelter advertising? When you walk in to select bus stops in California, it smells of chocolate chip cookies. Who wouldn't say Got Milk?

2) Mexico
Or how about these Spanish language commercials where Got Milk? is featuring the health benefits of drinking milk.
3) Switzerland
Then there is the outdoor seen by the Swiss This one by Milk Gives Strong Bones...again no milk mustache included.
4) Germany
This German ad for milk uses the tongue and not the mustache.
This Canadian billboard is promoting "One of milk is good, but two are better." 6) India How about this ad from Mother Dairy. A surprising site from inside a milk shop in Delhi, This one's pretty recognizable. Check out this tv commercial from Dairy . Here's an ad that will scare you into drinking milk. This ad for a South African brand of milk. Let's see, a guy gets stuck in bear trap; guy tries to free himself by sawing off foot; guy fails to saw off foot due to incredibly strong, milk-fortified bones; guy dies and rots. That is really what the ad was about. 9) Brasil No mustache in Brasil. The ad here is that "Milk Drinkers Grow Taller" Personally, I love the Got Milk? milk mustache campaigns and hope they continue on for years to come. They can target everyone by constantly changing the celebrity. From the Rugrats to Steven Tyler to Kelly Clarkston, then there was Sarena Williams, Lord of the Rings and Meredith Vieira. What do you think of the milk mustache ads? Do you like other milk advertising better? Could the milk mustache go global? Do you know of any other milk advertising or promotion that works?5) Canada
7) Australia
8) South Africa

Hayden also has a beautiful smile. Milk helps her reduce the risk of tooth decay by acting as a substitute to our saliva to clear cavity-promoting substance. Milk also acts as a buffer to protect our teeth from harmful acids as well as to rematerialise tooth enamel. Maybe our teeth can be whiter if we drink enough milk? ;)
Haha! All these got milk ads make me want to do it myself ;P Next time...

Dairy Product Hazards - Are Dairy Products Making You Sick?
How humans, cows and elephants all share one thing in common ... they are mammals.
According to milk and dairy (marketing) boards, human mammals, you and I, require a lot of dairy products like milk and cheese to build strong healthy bones.
Yet science clearly shows us that all normal mammals stop producing the enzymes needed to digest their baby food (mothers milk) once they are weaned!
Hummm...
In nature, the only mammal that drinks milk after it's weaned are humans, and then it is just a small contingent of western Caucasians. The majority do not drink milk.
Have you ever wondered how the cows and elephants maintain their much larger bone structure and size? Probably not ... but it is certainly not by drinking another animal’s milk!
Cows normally eat foods such as leaves, grass, and other vegetable matter ... at least the happy organic cows do, unfortunately, the majority consume excessive, unnatural and manmade compounds to accelerate mass-production of cow milk!
"The dairy folks, ever since the 1920s, have been enormously successful in cultivating an environment within virtually all segments of our society—from research and education to public relations and politics—to have us believing that cow's milk and its products are manna from heaven. ... Make no mistake about it; the dairy industry has been virtually in total control of any and all public health information that ever rises to the level of public scrutiny." Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Professor, Cornell University
Symptoms Disappear In The Absence of Dairy
Did you know that a host of common health issues (symptoms) that plague us today tend to clear up when dairy is minimized or removed from the daily diet?
- Asthma, allergies, strep throat, tonsillitis, ear infections, pimples, acne,
- Low energy, digestive problems (such as gas, diarrhea, bloating, cramps),
- Overweight, cardiovascular problems, hardening of the arteries,
- Calcification of the kidneys, bedwetting, mental retardation, female reproductive problems such as menstrual irregularities, menstrual cramps and heavy flow,
- Ovarian tumors and cysts, vaginal discharges and infections and swelling of the breasts.
Dr. Benjamin Spock, author of the world-famous book Baby and Child Care, wrote in 1998, "Cow’s milk is not recommended for a child when he is sick—or when he is well, for that matter. Dairy products may cause more mucus complications and cause more discomfort with upper respiratory infections."
The Western Diet And Osteoporosis
Did you know that a diet high in refined carbohydrates, animal proteins, fats and processed foods – which is the typical North American diet - has been linked to a greater incidence of osteoporosis, bone fractures and other bone conditions ... why?
- Because such a diet is significantly inadequate in many nutrients
- Because it is excessively high in the mineral phosphorus
- Because large amounts of phosphorus antagonize calcium in the body, in effect pulling the calcium from our bones
- Milk and dairy products, the foods most often recommended for healthy bones are excessively high in phosphorus and may actually promote osteoporosis
In fact, the more dairy products consumed, the higher the rate of osteoporosis. Bone problems and bone disease are virtually non-existent in those countries where dairy consumption is the lowest.
"It is hard to turn on the television without hearing commercials suggesting that milk promotes strong bones. The commercials do not point out that only 30 percent of milk's calcium is absorbed by the body or that osteoporosis is common among milk drinkers. Nor do they help you correct the real causes of bone loss."Dr. Neal Barnard
Revealing Facts About Dairy Milk
Cow’s milk has 3X more protein and almost 4X more calcium than human milk. This is good for the calf who will grow to be much larger than a human, but is it good for us?
- For humans, it is essential to understand that the ratio of calcium to phosphorus is important to the efficient absorption of calcium. When the ratio of phosphorus is too high, it prevents calcium absorption and actually leaches calcium from the body. The minimum recommended is 2:1, human is 2.3:1 and cows 1.2:1
- While protein and calcium are our building blocks, when we ingest more than we can absorb, the result is waste matter. Over time, this excess waste puts stress on the liver, intestines, lungs, kidneys and skin thus weakening them.
- The excess matter that cannot be efficiently excreted remains in the body and turns into mucus, pus, creating a medium for bacteria, parasites and Candida.
- Other points to consider is that while the fat content of both milks are similar, cows milk has 48% less natural carbohydrates and almost 300% more sodium
- Pasteurization reduces Vitamin C by 50% and Homogenization breaks up milk molecules into smaller pieces to pass through intestinal wall unchanged by digestive process.
- An enzyme called xanthine oxylase or XO found in milk fat which breaks down protein, also passes through the intestinal walls. As it travels along the bloodstream, it scratches and corrodes the arterial walls, causing lesions. As a defense against this, the body deposits fibrin and cholesterol over lesions to avoid further damage.
The bottom line is a food high in calcium is simply not enough. Beyond the calcium to phosphorus ratio that aids in calcium absorption, many other naturally occurring nutrients such as magnesium and vitamin D are needed to build strong bones.
Where Can I Get My Calcium If Not from Dairy
Whenever it is suggested that milk and dairy products be avoided, there is always the inevitable question: “And where will I get my calcium?”
The first step is to consider a sound alternative to dairy and there are many great foods that contain calcium in a natural, easy-to-assimilate form:
- Beans, nuts, sesame seeds and tahini, salmon, sardines
- sea vegetables (kelp, kombu, wakame
- Greens – especially broccoli, alfalfa sprouts, bok choy, collards, kale, mustard and turnip tops, parsley, watercress, dandelion
- Parsnips, rutabaga, turnips, etc.
Be Aware Of Foods That Do Affect Calcium Absorption Negatively
There are also some foods that affect negatively our calcium balance in some way. It is better to avoid them or eat them in small quantities:
- concentrated sugars, high-protein foods
- nightshades like potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, tobacco
- citrus, wine, vinegar, coffee, alcohol, salt, soda pop and … milk and dairy products.
Simple things you can do that can save your life.
There are many obvious opportunities to be proactive in your life. Perhaps a better know one is to change the batteries in your smoke detectors with the time zone change each spring and fall. Others things you can do are just as obvious but perhaps not done yet.
1. Carbon monoxide - deadly gas - colorless - odourless - invisible
It can leak from a furnace or water heater and oftentimes people don't know there is a problem until someone becomes very ill or dies.
The easiest thing to do to prevent this is to buy a carbon monoxide detector and place it near your furnace and water heater so that you will be made aware that there is a leak.
2. Know that you can start a fire by filling up your gas tank
Static electricity from your skin can be transferred to the gas vapours and this can then start a fire in your gas tank.
Simple ways to prevent this are to never get in and out of your car when filling up your tank. Never smoke while filling up your tank.
- Leave cell phones and pagers in your car.
- Touch your car with your hand before touching the nozzle to put gas into your car as this will eliminate any static electricity on your skin.
- Also don't talk on your cell phone while filling your gas tank.
3. Most are aware that unfiltered tap water is not good to drink
Water is the essence of life. Making up roughly 65 percent of our muscles and brain tissue, it is the most important nutrient in our body. Only oxygen is craved by the body more than water.
The city of Montreal is warning pregnant women and young children not to drink unfiltered tap water from some areas of the city because of lead levels. (March 7, 2007) Risk is associated with pre-1960's homes where lead was used in construction.
The most serious case of water contamination in Canadian history resulted in seven people dead and 2,300 ill after Walkerton's water supply became contaminated with manure spread on a farm near the town. Walkerton Ontario was a clear example of municipal water management gone awry and where will it strike next? The responsibility for health is solely in our individual hands.
With all the pollution and toxins in our environment our municipal water system just does not do a good enough job eliminating these things from our drinking water.
Because of this it is necessary to have a good whole house filtration system installed. If you can't afford this then at least get a filtration system hooked up to your kitchen sink.
Distilled water is not the best choice as it takes all the minerals out of the water. One of the best choices is a reverse osmosis system.
You see bottled water everywhere but be warned that there are no Federal regulations on bottled water so what is in the next bottle of water you purchase may be the very same water coming out of your tap at home.
Over a period of several years, the best and cheapest way to get good water is with a filter system installed at your home.

4. Throw your microwave oven away
There is a reason why microwave ovens are banned in Europe. Well, that's at best wishful but some of the earliest research into the effects of microwaved food was conducted in the 1950s in Russia. That research indicated bigger dangers than destruction of nutrients.
Russian researchers found that people who ate microwaved foods had a statistically higher incidence of stomach and intestinal cancers, a general degeneration of peripheral cellular tissues, and a gradual breakdown of the digestive and excretory systems. Due to chemical alterations within the food, they had lymphatic malfunctions, causing a degeneration of the body’s immune system.
For instance, microwaving milk and cereal grains converted some of their amino acids into carcinogens, thawing frozen fruits converted their glucoside and galactoside containing fractions into carcinogenic substances, and carcinogenic free radicals were formed in microwaved plants, especially root vegetables.
They also reported structural degradation leading to decreased availability of Vitamins B, C, E and essential minerals at a rate of 60 to 90 percent in all foods tested.
As a result of that research, the Soviets banned the use of microwave ovens in 1976 and issued an international warning on the health hazards, both biological and environmental, of microwave ovens and similar frequency electronic devices.
The ban has since been over-turned and the rest of the world appears not to have headed the warning. Meanwhile, researchers from the Spanish scientific research council CEBAS-CSIC found that cooking by microwave is the worst way to preserve at least one key nutrient in vegetables.
According to Dr. Cristina Garcia-Viguera, co-author of the study, microwaved broccoli loses 97 percent, 74 percent, and 87 percent of the three major cancer-protecting antioxidant compounds (flavonoids, sinapics and caffeoyl-quinic derivatives).
By comparison, steamed broccoli loses 11 percent, 0 percent and 8 percent of the very same antioxidants. In 1991, Dr. Hertel and Dr. Blanc of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University Institute for Biochemistry published a research paper indicating that food cooked in microwave ovens could pose a greater risk to health than food cooked by conventional means.
An article also appeared a Swiss environmental magazine entitled Journal Franz Weber, which stated that the consumption of food cooked in microwave ovens had cancerous effects on the blood as indicated by an increase of leukocytes, which could indicate cell damage, after eating microwaved substances.
As soon as Doctors Hertel and Blanc published their results, the authorities reacted. In 1992, a powerful trade organization, the Swiss Association of Dealers for Electro-apparatuses for Households and Industry, known as FEA forced the Swiss courts to issue a “gag order” against them. The following year, Dr. Hertel was convicted for “interfering with commerce” and prohibited from further publishing his results. However, the following year he successfully fought and won the decisions.
You are paying a great price for this convenience.
In a study by Dr. Radwan Farag of Cairo University, it was discovered that just two seconds of microwave energy destroys all the enzymes in a food, thus increasing our enzyme deficiency and altering the frequency of the food.
Microwaves can be detected up to 1500 feet away from the oven. Heating proteins in the microwave for 10 minutes or more may create a new, harmful type of protein. Also, microwave radiation has been known to leak and could disrupt the delicate balances in cellular growth.
In reality, there are a lot of studies, none very positive so the best course of action for the safety of all concerned should be a ban on the devices known as microwaves. Keep yours and use it as a bread box!
That's 4 tip easy to address life saving tips to share with your family and friends.
If you are not drinking enough clean water throughout the day, every day, your body becomes dehydrated and the symptoms frequently include cloudy urine, a strong odor, urinary burning and/or dark urine color.
These are just a few of the many symptoms of dehydration and prolonged states of water drought in the body can lead to many more severe conditions ... but the solution can be simple!
By the way, the normal color of urine should be almost clear to pale yellow.
First you need to realize that your body is composed of about 75% water and 25% solid matter and your brain is estimated to be up to 85%. The human body evolved from water and hydration is a dominate influence on health.
"Dry mouth" is the very last sign of body dehydration!
In fact, water is the fluid in your body that makes your life, and life itself possible. Water provides the primary means of transport at and within the cellular level and throughout the body, in short it is essential to the chemistry of life.
By the time you recognize the feeling of thirst, the cells in your body are already water deprived and in that state they operate less efficiently.
To complicate that, as the body ages it slowly looses the sensation of thirst and an increased risk of dehydration.
The body loses as much as 4 liters of fluid a day, every day!
This water loss is through a number of normal body functions including urine, sweat, breathing (exhaling moisture) and bowel movements. The lost fluids must be replenished constantly to avoid the risk of cell damage and the ripple effect of diminished organ function leading to disease.
The kidneys filter about 180 liters of blood and extracts about 2 liters of waste as urine daily. When the body is not receiving sufficient pure clean water, the kidneys, will slow down their purifying activities and result in blood becoming too thick.
The thickened blood in turn impedes the circulation of oxygen, nutrients, hormones which prevents them from being successfully transferred to tissues and cells throughout the body. This puts stress on body systems that can eventually lead to illness and disease.
Toxic blood can eventually wear out the immune system.
Over time, organic compounds may tend to settle out of solution and form “gravel” or stones. Such kidney stones may also occur because of an individual’s genetic makeup, or in individuals lacking minerals like magnesium.
- If the kidneys stop working, blood pressure becomes disturbed, ammonia and other chemical build-ups may lead to mental problems, body tissues may swell (edema), and body functions will slow down.
- Kidney and bladder complaints are fairly wide spread and can almost always trace their beginnings to the earliest warning symptoms of cloudy urine, a strong odor, urinary burning and/or dark urine color.
Whether it is an urinary burning sensation, inability to hold the water, cloudy or dark urine when voided, discomfort in the mid back, frequent urination, blood in the urine, and so on; the issues are there and very real, and let’s face it, they are most irritating. Remember that is a majority of situations, these are just symptoms of dehydration and can be addressed inexpensively when dealt with quickly.
It's critical to be aware of how much water your body needs
Your body does not have a reserve of water so regular (daily) clean water hydration is critical for overall body health. Coffee, tea, power drinks and soft drinks do not count and in fact can be detrimental to your health due to the vast array of chemical additives and usual heavy loading of sugars and sugar substitutes.
The calculation to determine your individual water consumption needs is simple.
- Take your weight in pounds and divide by 2. The rounded result represents the number fluid ounces fresh clean water you need throughout the day, every day.
- To break that down to a practical measure, divide the total ounces by 8 to find the number of glasses of water you should be consuming through your day.
DO NOT COUNT FOR HYDRATION
- Sodas and soft drinks. These manufactured products are mostly water but they have a very high sugar or chemical sweeteners content and artificial flavorings that are harmful to your health so enjoy them, infrequently. Diet sodas should be avoided completely.
- Juices, coffee, tea, sodas and power drinks. Even though these manufactured products are largely made up of water, the diuretics contained in these caffeinated beverages flush water out of your body.
DO HYDRATE WITH WATER
- Water comes in many forms but the best water you can consume for your body is reverse osmosis which is available in water stores for a very modest cost. Second might be distilled followed by spring water. Note that spring water is typically filtered tap water.
- In most towns and cities, water from the tap smells due to the chemical treatments and while city safety statements suggest no harm, who want to drink water that smells bad! A good quality filtering system is recommended.
- Drinking water at room temperature is body friendly!
Easy First 2 Steps Combating Water Dehydration
Easy Step 1) Easy Tip for cloudy urine, burning or strong smell:
If you do experience cloudy urine, urinary burning and/or a strong smell the low/no cost approach is to consider how many glasses of clean water you are drinking because for most people, it's usually not enough. Remember, the last sensation of a dehydrated body is thirst!
Note that it takes time for your cells to become rehydrated.
For this reason, you should slowly increase by one glass per day, per week ,until you achieve your ideal amount using the following as a guide to spread consumption across the day. If you are in the lower weight range, use smaller serving sizes to ensure your hydration is evenly distributed:
- Have a glass first thing in the morning, even before coffee
- Have a glass 1/2 hour before every meal, mid morning, afternoon and evening
- Do NOT drink water during meal time as it dilutes your digestive juices and enzymes and impairs digestion
- Have a glass just before bedtime
Regular water intake helps your body function better, raises the metabolism, enhances the absorption of nutrients from your foods and is exceptionally good for those watching their weight. In fact, a well hydrated body is more resistant to disease and premature aging.
In many cases you'll resolve the cloudy urine and strong smell and notice your complexion improves, weight stabilizes and your thinking become clearer as your system becomes more efficient at flushing out toxins.
Easy Step 2) Cleanse And Detoxify Your Key Body Organs Gently
You can help this cleansing process by completing a 10-15 day herbal cleanse which will noticeably improve your feeling of wellness as your body function improves.
Once you begin to improve your daily level of good clean water, it's time to consider an all natural (and gentle) body cleanse to help rid your body of toxins. This will nutritionally strengthen and restore your body systems to a more efficient state of function and not only improve your natural elimination of toxins, it will return new energy and vitality as your body returns to a balanced state of health.
Tiao He Cleanse will naturally strengthen 3 core body systems as it helps your body to naturally detoxify the waste accumulated in your body. Get our Tiao He Colon Cleanse & Body Detox kit to flush your system of toxins ...
Since this afternoon, our lunch was very simple and cheap. We believe we must buy ourselves something to compensate the lost in nutrition. By this time, the usual mobile peddler who sell everything you can imagine from char siew pau, chicken pau, siew mai, to soya bean drinks, drove by our house.
We quickly rushed out and bought this…
A big bottle of Soya Bean Drink, for RM4.80. Not cheap, right?
Anyway, I think it is OK since he delivers the goods to your gate front in a mini lorry. Yes, that’s the price of convenience. The soya bean drink tastes great, not too sweet and very refreshing.
OK, that’s all for now, I am going to get myself another cup ![]()
Trivial
Soya bean has many nutritional advantages as it contains protein, fibre and isoflavones which have positive effects on cholesterol, bone density, menstrual and menopausal symptoms as well as preventing certain cancers. It is thought to be a wonder food by some who believe it can cure kidney disease, water retention, common colds, anaemia and leg ulcers.

What is Reverse Osmosis?
Reverse osmosis (R/O) is a water treatment process in which water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane that has very small holes or "pores". Clean water passes through and impurities that are too big to pass through the membrane are left behind and flushed away.
Do I Need a Reverse Osmosis Unit?
It is presumed in this document that the water you are using meets all health regulations and is known to be safe. If your municipality or utility supplies your drinking water, it is likely that you do not need a reverse osmosis unit. Municipally supplied drinking water is microbiologically safe. It is treated to meet health and aesthetic requirements, and is subject to routine testing for microbiological contamination.
If you obtain drinking water from a private supply such as well, it may not be safe from microbiological, chemical, or other types of contamination. Drinking water from private sources should be tested periodically to determine if treatment is required; and, if so, for what specific contaminants or minerals.
Water chemistry is complex and no single water treatment device can be used to remove all types of substances from water. Different drinking water treatment devices have their own advantages and disadvantages. Each household must individually determine if there is a need for additional water treatment. If this is the case, determine the unit or combination of units best suited for your water needs.
How Does Reverse Osmosis Work?
Reverse osmosis systems purify water by forcing pressurized water through a very fine, plastic membrane. If the raw water being treated comes from a well or another private source, disinfection and pre-filters (to remove chlorine and/or particulates/sediment) may be needed in advance of the R/O unit to remove contaminants that can foul or damage the membrane.
Stages of reverse osmosis:
1.During the initial filtration stage, tap water or well water (pressurized by a booster pump) is passed through a particle filter (a pre-filter) that removes silt, sediment, sand, and clay particles that might clog the R/O membrane.
2.The water is then forced through an activated carbon filter that traps minerals and contaminants such as chromium, mercury, copper, chloramine and pesticides. It also removes chlorine, which is important, as chlorine will shorten the life of the membrane.
3.Water is transferred under pressure into the R/O module, allowing only clean water to pass through the small pores in the membrane. Impurities unable to pass through the membrane are left behind and flushed down the drain.
4.Treated water is then sent to a storage tank.
5.Treated water is passed through an activated carbon filter before use to further improve the water's taste and smell.
Water that contains manganese, hydrogen sulphide or iron should be pre-treated to extend the life of the membrane. A dealer can recommend the pre-treatment needed.
Note: Reverse Osmosis units produce no noise other than the sound of water discharging into the drain (usually a sink or a floor drain).
How Do I Know What Size Unit to Buy?
R/O units are rated according to the amount of treated water produced per day. For example, one type of unit produces 50 litres of treated water per day under its design conditions. Such a unit is generally rated with 60 psi water line pressure, a water temperature of 25° C (77° F), normal dissolved solids and 2 atmospheres of pressure. In reality, conditions frequently vary. Line pressure is often lower, water will frequently be colder than 25° C and backpressure in the storage tank will likely reduce the performance of the unit. Consequently, you should examine water conditions and buy a larger rated unit than needed if any of the above problems are noted.
Where Do I Buy Reverse Osmosis Units?
Reverse osmosis units are sold at some department and hardware stores, and by water equipment dealers. Companies can be found listed under "Water"or "Water Companies" in the Yellow Pages. You may wish to talk to a variety of vendors to compare features.

How Much Do Reverse Osmosis Units Cost?
Reverse osmosis unit prices vary, from $400 for a portable or undersink unit to $2,500 for a larger, stationary (basement) unit where a booster pump and a pressure system are installed. Replacement pre-filters range in price from approximately $100 – $200 each.
Who Installs the RO Unit?
Many R/O units are designed to operate on the kitchen counter. Some of the larger units are connected under the counter or in the basement. The unit will need to be hooked up to the water line and a discharge-to-the-drain line. Larger units may require professional installation, where a special water supply line is run from the main household water line. If you are unsure about installation, contact a plumber or mechanical contractor.
What Are the Benefits of Reverse Osmosis?
Reverse osmosis can remove dissolved solids, salts, minerals that cause hardness, organic chemicals and other impurities. It can improve the taste of water for people who do not like the taste of dissolved mineral solids.
Treated water will not produce scale in kettles and coffee makers. Because sodium and potassium are removed, people on a medically prescribed sodium- or potassium-restricted diet may benefit. R/O units may also remove contaminants such as chromium, mercury and nitrates. Before purchasing a R/O unit, check the certification and literature for the particular model to verify exactly what it can and cannot remove.
Is Reverse Osmosis - Treated Water Safe to Drink?
Reverse osmosis treatment systems remove minerals like calcium and magnesium from drinking water. In Canada, water is a minor source of such minerals when compared to foods. If you consume a reasonably balanced diet, you do not need to take a mineral supplement when drinking water treated with a reverse osmosis system. Low levels of minerals in drinking water may be a concern for people living in countries with very hot climates.
Is the Water Source Safe?
A R/O unit should be used only with drinking water that is known to be safe to drink. Although reverse osmosis can remove microbiological contaminants, R/O does not disinfect the water to drinking standards. A flaw or tear to the membrane could allow untreated water to flow through the unit without removing disease-causing organisms. Remember if you are unsure of the quality of your water, get it tested. If you have any doubts about the safety of your water, then it should be disinfected before using a R/O unit.
How Much Water Does the Unit Use? Is It Water-Efficient?
Some R/O units can produce 4 litres per minute and others will produce 30 to 94 litres per day. In operating a R/O unit, a large amount of incoming water is used to produce the final treated water. This unusable water (called brine) contains contaminants that the R/O unit has removed. The amount of brine created will depend on the quality of the incoming water.
Operating a reverse osmosis unit is not water-efficient — and the amount of water used depends on the quality of the incoming water. In some cases, where water is free of dissolved solids, two litres of water may be needed to produce one litre of finished water. In other cases, 4 or 5 litres of water may be used to produce one litre of treated water.
A family of four might need 40 to 80 litres of water to produce 8 to 16 litres of treated water for drinking and cooking per day. This would cost about ten to twenty cents per day for water. If more treated water is desired, then more water would be used. This will also increase water and wastewater bills, or create a higher demand on your well and septic system.
Watch the Water Pressure
R/O units will not operate efficiently at water pressures below 40 – 45 psi. If the pressure is too low, as in the case in many rural private systems; in an apartment on a higher floor of a building; or at the end of a long water line serving several units, a booster pump should be installed to increase pressure.
Do I Need to Maintain the Unit?
Reverse osmosis units must be maintained as per the manufacturer's recommendations. Typically the sediment pre-filter and the activated carbon pre-filters should be changed at least annually. However, these prefilters may need to be changed as often as once every six months if the water entering the unit contains sand, large amounts of chlorine or other substances that impair filter efficiency. Although membranes in a well-maintained unit can last for several years, the membrane may need to be replaced more frequently than the manufacturers suggested timeline.

Certification
Although drinking water materials such as water filters are not currently regulated in Canada, Health Canada recommends that all products that come into contact with drinking water be certified to the appropriate health-based performance standard developed by NSF International. In the case of Reverse Osmosis, it is recommended that they be certified as meeting standard NSF/ANSI 58. In Canada, CSA International, NSF International, and Underwriters Laboratories have been accredited by the Standards Council of Canada to certify drinking water materials as meeting the above-mentioned standards. These standards are widely accepted in North America, as they ensure the removal of specific contaminants, as well as the performance and mechanical integrity of the materials that come into contact with drinking water. Check the Reverse Osmosis unit's packaging or ask your dealer for a listing of the substances that the unit is certified to remove.
Where Can I Get More Information?
You can consult Health Canada's Web site at http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ewh-semt/water-eau/index_e.html, which describes many activities related to Canadian drinking water quality. From simple colds and viruses to life-threatening diseases, any kind of health problem can put a huge strain on your pocketbook. By adopting certain habits you cannot only save money on fewer doctor’s visits and medications, you can preserve your cash in other ways.
Below are eight frugal living tips that will actually lengthen your lifespan.
1. Quit Smoking
Although quitting may be easier said than done, it is a no-brainer that doing so will cut costs and help save your life. The CDC actually offers a helpful guide to quitting smoking, which could be a great resource when you decide to put down the tobacco once and for all.
2. Stop Tanning
There is a growing fad for people of all ages and cultures to look bronzed. If you are seeking the warmth of a tanning bed in order to look a certain way, then it is time you stopped. Quitting now will decrease your chances of developing malignant melanoma.
3. Cancel Your Paid Television
It is obvious how this will save money, but you may not see the direct connection to your health. Simply put, it will get you off that couch and encourage you to pursue more active, healthy activities.
4. Drink Only Water
Water is essential for good health and you should definitely be drinking a minimum of eight glasses per day, maybe even more. By ditching all other beverages for simple tap water, you will also save a considerable amount of money.
5. Wear Sensible Shoes
This is a hard message to get across to many women, as they seem to think they are better off in stylish, expensive shoes. Not so, as many high-end shoes are terrible for your back and posture. This can, in turn, lead to other problems. Opt for sensibly priced, comfortable shoes – both your wallet and your back will thank you for it.
6. Avoid the Drive-Thru
Eating out while on the go can nickel and dime your pocketbook until there is nothing left. Not only that, but the food is often terribly unhealthy.
7. Eat Slowly
When you eat too quickly, you will often overeat as a result. This will likely cause you to spend more money on larger portions and it will also contribute to digestive issues. Take it easy when you start a meal and finish at your leisure.
8. Relax at Home
Rather than going out on the town when you have some free time, save your money and have a relaxing night in. Believe it or not, your stress level will be reduced when you can relax in a calm atmosphere. This, in turn, improves your overall health.
By following the above advice, you will save a ton of money. Luckily, you will have many more years to enjoy that saved money, as you will also be much healthier. Many people sacrifice health for money or vice versa, but it is possible to have it all by improving your everyday habits.
You're about to discover a unique yet easy method that helps you successfully change your way of thinking about weight loss and enables you to simply shed those unwanted pounds forever.
You may find it somewhat frustrating, but if you're like most people, you misplace things like your car keys, eye glasses or gloves as you go about your busy day. We all tend to do that to a degree, but in the end, do you really lose that item forever?
Of course not, except on rare occasions, you'll usually find the lost item then continue on your way. So think about this for a moment ...do you ever seriously think you'll never see it again? ...
In fact, 99% of the time you do expect to find those lost items and I suggest to you that this is our mindset behind the concept of weight loss - a concept many well marketed weight loss programs have discovered and expanded upon immensely.
The very idea of losing something automatically and immediately sets your mind to the task of finding it again! In the case of weight loss, it is a sub-conscious task; consider the many "weight loss" programs available to you. Why is it that so many people struggle with a weight challenge, trying program after program and all the diets, only to see the weight return soon after the program ends?
"When you understand what specific factors contribute to weight gain, clearly and simply see why those factors have such a profound and unwanted effect inside your body and then discover the simple truths, you'll never worry about your weight again"
When given the chance, your body will naturally and automatically strive for a state of balance; physical, mental and social and it's your state of balance or imbalance that ultimately determines your weight and your everyday state of energy, vitality and well-being.
How Balanced is Your Body?
Everything produced by your body, including weight and symptoms of any kind has to do with the quality of your body's internal state of balance.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) “Health is a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being.”
The body is comprised of 9 primary systems which are like links in a chain, they’re interdependent and the chain is only as strong as the weakest link.
When you're considering weight, three systems often stand out with distinction, the glandular system and the digestive-intestinal systems. They have an extraordinary impact on your overall state of balance and this is the area where your battle to regain control over your body weight and health must begin. These systems are your ground zero, but remember other systems may need attention too if you're to enjoy optimum health.
1) When you understand what your existing imbalances are in your body, you will have taken a huge step toward successfully achieving health and your ideal body weight. Until you're balanced, you'll have little success shedding weight permanently and other health related symptoms will persist.
2) 8 in 10 people experience some degree of glandular imbalance and the more severe the symptoms, the more attention is required to return the body to health. Why is this an issue? Your metabolism, your blood sugar levels and other vitally essential functions all affect your ability to carry on normally and they are controlled by your glandular system.
When you identify why your glands are sending the wrong messages and correct them, your body will respond with increased vigor thereby eliminating those sluggish feelings and general lack of energy.
3) You should never have to diet! You may say “I lost weight before, just by dieting. Why would I need to be concerned?” It's a really great question, and the answer is another secret to achieving your ideal weight!
In the normal course of daily life you're trying to eat well but sometimes reduce the volume of foods ingested, eat empty calories such as manufactured foods built with highly refined white sugar and/or white flour or perhaps your skip meals too often and the fact is, in all cases you're building a nutrient debt.
Over time, your body goes deeper into this nutrient debt and as a result, begins automatically reacting to a perceived state of famine. In this survival mode, your body now retains all the fat it can. When you go on a nutrient deprived diet, which starves the body even further, you may lose a few pounds initially, but it will return, and sometimes more!
Starving the body simply does NOT work long-term!
Achieving your ideal weight therefore also depends on the types of food you consume vs. the calories.
When you regularly focus on nutrient rich fresh raw fruits and vegetables vs. canned or frozen, whole grains like kamut, spelt vs. whole wheat, more good fats, and a lot less refined and processed foods, your body consumes and processes this food very efficiently leaving no need to build fat reserves against the threat of famine!
Your good health and ideal weight are also dependant on a few other factors you'd be clever to incorporate into your life:
- Stress management techniques, relaxation, breathing
- Exercise even at a moderate level just 30 minutes a day
- Colon cleansing/detoxifying alone can help you lose 3-10 lbs and has the added benefit of invigorating your body systems so they function more efficiently,
Weight control is not a punishment, it is a choice of healthy living. Have a favorite treat from time to time but like everything, do it in moderation
